Compilation #2: Yakety Yak PlunderPhonoPhilia
Rules:
- all audio material must be generated in Reaktor with these
two Yakety Yak samples.
- one piece per participant, <= 3 minutes long.
- all styles welcome.
I realize that using samples from Yakety Yak is, strictly speaking, a
violation of copyright. But since this is non-commercial, and since the
submissions will fall clearly in the realm of parody, we should have no
problems. And if we do all get arrested and sent to musical Siberia, how
cool would that be ... ? ;-)
Yield (in reverse-alphabetical order by creator (first) name):
zerocrossing: dedopdehboh
I ran the Yakety sample (and pieces of the Yakety sample, and pieces
of mangled versions of the Yakety sample) through a bunch of different
ensembles. I know I used the following at various points in the project:
Splitter, L3, Topinambur A (with a pure Yakety Sample Map), Redchannel,
Simple Sampler, Rachboz Ungeheuer, It's Gonna Grain2, Trilobyte. There
are probably other ensembles used that I'm forgetting.
"This wins for the coolest sounds derived from the original sample.
I love the way this stays true to itself as a consistent form and then
seems to fade out for a bit and comes back with a whole new section
of even cooler sounds, hinting at further development a la Strawberry
Fields Forever. I wish this one was about twice as long." - tubaman
theologiae: circle 6
sowari: Yakakkakka
"This sounds like something between a Steve Reich music and some
strange African chanting. Very cool." - tubaman
rachMiel: yakDubb
i had a fever when i created this, like composing in a dream ... :-)
"Of all the pieces, I think this one makes the best use of space
(silences) as well as virtual space, with a nice variety of reverb/delay
applications." - tubaman
Marc Busch: Yakitori
I mainly used Vectory, L3, FX section from LimeLite, Flatblaster and
some more (R5) effects.
"This is the favorite among favorite for me, simply because the
composer dares to state the sample at the beginning and THEN take it
out. I was actually surprised more pieces didn't approach that way.
Some really cool "licks" are worked out from the sax bits
and the foot gets tapping with the very creative "groove: that's
been set up. Another song I could stand to listen to if it were about
8 minutes long." - tubaman
Jopy: Yakety Hak Excerpt
Several vocal sample slices were processed at different pitches and
playback speeds in Scenario. Five different live mix sessions were made
then spliced together and layered. This forms the first half of the
piece. The excerpt, which is the second half of the piece, features
slices of sax, drums, and bass at various pitches and grain sizes played
in Randolph 2.

Joe Risch: The Yak Bellows
"This has the feel of a very exotic soundtrack. It would have
been a cool piece to use in King Kong (when they get to the Island),
low-key kind of tribal sound and a bit disturbed. I love it." -
tubaman
dongle doc: Good Yapety
beginning is done with the famous RACHBOZGEHEUER improved by myself
( i can upload it but it's a little untidy ! ). all rhythms come from
KRYPT and GOBOX ( fed whith slices of yakety songs ) as well as sax
tracks ... then the mastering is done by flatblaster 2.
"What I like most with this one is the use of the sax part of
the sample. Especially around the mid-point of the song, where it gets
sounding like some weird Anthony Braxton piece." - tubaman
chietronix: Glitchy Yak
"I have a limited tolerance for "glitch" music, at least
in one sitting, but knowing what the original source material was, this
pieces is fascinating to me. I love the variety of sounds and the musical
development, which makes this piece work for me." - tubaman
Brian Kennedy: HackingYaks
HackingYaks was primarily modified using Vectory. I chopped up the
original clips you supplied into 6 smaller clips using Cool Edit Pro
and then placed those smaller clips into Vectory. Using Vectory and
reaktors recorder I created roughly 30 mashed up loops. I then took
those loops and sorted and
arranged the Ableton Live until I had a structure I liked. For some
final touches I added some delay (Bucketboy), reverb (Spacemaster),
and the compressed the mix with Flatblaster 2. All audio was only mangled
using Reaktor, and now warping was used in Ableton.
