Compilation #5: zoBelia
Rules:
- submit a piece whose sounds and personality derive from Dieter Zobel
(aka Didier Leboz) ensembles.
- one piece per participant, 1-5 minutes long.
zoBelia resultate:
jjclark: Funny Bunny
This track uses Vocodil, Brain Clown, and Double Ouzo. I was trying
for a Zobel-esque Boards of Canada sound.
Don Dailey: Le Bozzobel v2
I have always been a little overwhelmed by Zobel's work. One often
feels that the ensemble is really in charge of the user. But after spending
some time with his work exclusively, I began to get a better understanding
of how to use them. To express this, I started a bit chaotic and unfocused,
but soon settle into a bit of a groove. At anytime, as with Zobel's
ensembles, the order can easily become chaos again, until the user can
regain control. Thus, the groove slips in and out, with brief bursts
of chaos.
My compositional approach was designed to retain as much as possible
the character of the Zobel creations. My usual approach worked well
for this - record into RecorderBox and then cut up the resulting audio
and rearrange in a DA sequencer. I tried to sample something from every
category, except effects. I basically started with Zobel presets, which
I modified to taste, but wanted to keep as much Zobel in the piece as
I could. Ensembles used: FadoMago X, PadDrone, CrossCriss, Grauer Star
II, Double Ouzo, Ouzo 2, Hydropeg, Cloud Number 9, Haemotherapy, Brain
Clown. The sonic continuity of this composition, in spite of samples
from so many different ensembles is a testament to the unique sound
that is Zobel!
"cool collage of abstract sounds that seem quite organic in
their context. Immensely atmospheric" - tymes2
Joseph Risch: Long Weekend
This was created with oodles of Zobel's synths: WonderVox, Basstard,
Fadomago, Brain Clown, Dreier, Morphlot, Victor, Vierschrittorgel. I
did very little changing of the actual ensembles, although I strayed
from the presets, of course. l also used Flatblaster, Auto Panner, and
some eq fx from the library, to get rid of some of the low end mud.
Piece performed by Joe Risch after being taught it by Kareem "the
Egyptian Dream" arranged in Reaktor.
"Very moody, deep, wide open. Myst meets Bladerunner - very
impressive" - tymes2
dongle doc: Sacrezob
Done with Besynciger, Waffeleisen, and ChimaeraRachBoz.
Ras: Space and Time 1
Melodic multi-layered Zobel-tinged atmospherics created from the huge
back catalog of instruments. Creating sounds with these is a bit lke
trying to hold water in your hands; some you can hold and some of it
drips away. Enough sounds for a hundred other pieces!
Instruments: Morphes, Paradoxon, FadoMago, SineBeatsPlus, GatorFX, Demon,
Demon II, Cheesy Arps, BrainClown, Stottherhouse and couple of other
things that I'm not sure were finally used or not ...
rachMiel: waddLe
Just used one Leboz ensemble for this: Double Ouzo. I dialed in a very
slow tempo (40) and let Double Ouzo tell me what to do.
Marc Busch: Zak Hasengrippe
Bird flu is the present. Hasengrippe is the future. The song ... part
I is about the infection with Hasengrippe (typical symptoms are: headache,
stuttering, hyperventilation, shivers). Part II is recorded after medication
with Formantoria, Double Ouzo, Kurt Drummer, Locutus II, Easterhase,
Victor, ParaDoxon and Resovative III. Respiration has normalized, headache
is gone - some symptoms remain, though.
Greetings from snowy Germany.
"an entertaining excursion into what needs no label"
- tymes2
Tomoaki Otaka: Zobel Minimal
Jam
"reminds me of YMO - well, the intro at least, until it takes
a different direction" - tymes2
Brian Kennedy: ZWHIRLACKEN
This piece used Zobels Prank, MiniDrum and Flacheln ensembles and was
sequenced in Live. Through the course of writing for this comp I must
have gone through almost every one of Zobel's ensembles and through
that process I discovered most of his ensembles all share this amazing
swirl and this piece was written trying to capture that.
