Home Music Words About Contact Steve Goldstein
Stephen Goldstein set out to be the next Elvin Jones but was short circuited along the way. Instead he morphs his perverse polytonal and polyrhythmic audio sculptings into a myriad of musical, theatrical, and dance settings. He views the world through tri-focal lenses and his brain responds accordingly. Window 3 (12.4 mb) - Windows 3 and 8 are excerpts from Carei Thomas' Sound Window(s) V on Innova Records (to be released 2/2005). Patrick O'Keefe on clarinet, Steve Goldstein on laptop. Ensemble used: clist's LoopRippa. In this excerpt from a live concert, I used a map of samples I cut from recordings I made in India in the early '90s. When performing I use Reaktor as a standalone. Beforehand, I'll set up a number of snaps that each utilize an aspect of the ensemble and choose which snap to start with depending on the mood of the gig. I tend to do a lot of alterations to the ensembles I use, like changing the parameters depending on BPM or frequencies. For example, I may have a parameter's numbers jump in sixteenth notes or quarter-note triplets, etc. Window 8 (10.2 mb) - Jacqueline Ferrier-Ultan on 'cello, Steve Goldstein on laptop. Ensemble used: Mr Nowak's Black Dirt. I zero out this ensemble — as close as I can — load in a bunch of samples and play wheel of fortune. With this ensemble I grabbed portions of the results with the Kaos pad and used that as another layer. Sometimes I'll also route the laptop into an ASR-X, resample, and trigger with the pads. |
